Lessons Learned
My grandparents, Nan and Pawpaw, bought a used pop-up camper in June to be used by everyone in the family. We have been itching to try it out so we decided we would go camping on Aug. 3rd & 4th, just for one night so MA wouldn't have to take off of work. We hit a local state park, Cedars of Lebanon, which is only about 45 minutes from our house. We got a great spot next to the bath house and with lots of room for the kids to play. We got there about 9am Wednesday morning.
We got the pop-up camper set up in no time and turned on the a/c since the high was supposed to be 100!
The we ate lunch and attempted to put the kids down for a nap.
Evelyn loved her raisins!! After our failed attempt at a nap we decided to hit the pool. This is where we learned the first of three life lessons to be learned on this trip. Lesson 1: Don't take your dog camping! Chloe was not allowed into the pool area and since it was way too hot to leave her in the car we decided to tie her to a tree near the pool with her bowl of water. MA got about 20 feet from her before she had chewed through the lease and was at his side. She chewed through the lease once more and ended up being tied with the 6 inches of leash left to the pool fence so we could all try to cool off. We were only able to swim for about an hour because Chloe had to be under constant surveillance. So we left the pool and headed to the nature center for a tour. The nature center had a/c and that was pretty much it's only redeeming quality, though the kids really liked petting the king snake.
Tristan and Emeline found a rock to climb outside of the nature center. We hiked down to the cave, which was closed because the bats have some sort of sickness which can be passed to humans.
We found this cool stone table and managed to get some good pictures.
I have no idea what Tristan is doing here.
It is SO rare to get a decent picture of all three of them together, but we managed! The temp got up to 101 and we have no idea what the heat index was but it felt like 115 most of the day and the humidity was at 80%. It was miserable. Cue life lesson #2: Don't go camping if it is 90 degrees or over. So we decided to cheat a little and head into Lebanon for some dinner. We found an Applebee's, parked Chloe in the shade and enjoyed the good food and a/c. We were all worn out and hot!!
Evelyn was so happy to be in a/c. She is the most hot natured of us all, her hair stayed wet most of the time. She loved her applesauce.
Tristan enjoyed their ice cream sundae's which were free because it happened to be kids eat free night, which made the food even better!
We headed back to the campsite and once it got dark we built a fire and roasted marshmallows. I think this was the highlight for the kiddos. Then it was finally time for bed!!! We put Emeline and Tristan on the full size bed, Evelyn on the twin size bed (because it was closer to the floor in case she fell out) and we took the queen size bed. The went to sleep pretty well, they were exhausted. MA and I hit the bed around 10pm. The camper was nice and cold!! We were all fast asleep when we heard Evelyn fall out of her bed and start screaming. I quickly got her and put her in bed with us. Soon after that Emeline started crying, she had woken up and didn't know where she was. MA went and slept with Emeline and Tristan. Evelyn had been back asleep for about an hour when she suddenly woke up and vomited everywhere! Luckily she didn't get too much on her because she immediately fell asleep. MA and I cleaned up as much as we could and then went back to sleep. Every time Evelyn would move I would wake up to make sure she wasn't going to get sick again. Life lesson #3: Don't go camping with a child who doesn't know how to sleep in a bed without rails. Needless to say we woke up on Thursday morning exhausted.
